Position Summary
The Child Care Van Driver is responsible for providing safe, dependable, and timely transportation for children enrolled in the program. The driver is responsible for maintaining active supervision during transportation, following approved routes, completing accurate child attendance and vehicle records, conducting required vehicle safety checks, and ensuring that no child is ever left unattended in a vehicle.
The Van Driver must demonstrate patience, professionalism, good judgment, and a strong commitment to children's safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Transportation & Child Safety
- Safely transport children to and from the childcare center, school, field trips, and other approved locations.
- Follow all assigned transportation routes and schedules.
- Ensure children enter and exit the vehicle safely.
- Maintain active supervision of children during transportation, loading, and unloading.
- Ensure each child is properly secured using the appropriate seat belt, car seat, or child restraint as required.
- Follow authorized child release procedures.
- Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.
- Follow program procedures for emergencies, accidents, behavioral concerns, and transportation delays.
Child Attendance & Vehicle Checks
- Maintain an accurate transportation roster for every trip.
- Check children on and off the vehicle individually.
- Complete a physical walk-through of the entire vehicle after every route.
- Check every seat, row, floor area, and rear of the vehicle to confirm that no child remains inside.
- Document completed vehicle and child safety checks as required.
- Immediately report any missing child, incorrect child count, or transportation concern to administration.
Vehicle Safety & Maintenance
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Check tires, lights, mirrors, seat belts, child restraints, fuel levels, and other basic safety equipment.
- Keep the vehicle clean, organized, and free of trash and safety hazards.
- Report mechanical problems or damage immediately.
- Ensure required emergency supplies and first-aid materials are available in the vehicle.
- Do not operate a vehicle that appears unsafe.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families.
- Communicate respectfully with children, parents, school personnel, coworkers, and administrators.
- Maintain appropriate behavior expectations for children while riding in the vehicle.
- Attend required staff meetings, transportation training, safety training, and professional development.
- Follow all Bright Minds Bright Beginnings transportation, supervision, health, and safety policies.
- Immediately report accidents, injuries, incidents, or unusual circumstances to the Program Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum age required by applicable law, regulation, and insurance requirements.
- Valid driver's license appropriate for the vehicle being operated.
- Acceptable driving record.
- Ability to successfully complete required criminal background checks and child abuse clearances.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain certification within the required timeframe.
- Ability to meet all applicable driver, licensing, medical, and insurance requirements.
- Previous experience transporting or working with young children preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
The Van Driver must be able to:
- Safely operate the assigned vehicle.
- Follow written routes and transportation schedules.
- Maintain accurate child counts and transportation records.
- Communicate effectively with young children and adults.
- Remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies.
- Follow active supervision and child release procedures.
- Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
- Work cooperatively with teachers, administrators, families, and school personnel.
Zero-Tolerance Transportation Safety Expectations
The following practices are required at all times:
- No child may ever be left alone in a vehicle.
- Every child must be checked on and off the vehicle.
- A complete physical vehicle sweep must be conducted after every trip.
- Child counts must match the transportation roster.
- Children must be appropriately secured before the vehicle moves.
- Cell phone use or other distracted driving is prohibited while operating the vehicle.
- Safety concerns must be reported immediately.
Failure to follow transportation and child supervision procedures may result in corrective action, up to and including termination.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to safely enter and exit the vehicle, assist young children with boarding and exiting, sit and drive for extended periods, bend and reach while completing vehicle checks, and respond quickly during an emergency.
